Department of OBGYN

Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility

Fellowship Overview:

The Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility (REI) Fellowship Training Program at UPMC Medical Education, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is accredited by the ACGME and approved by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Currently, we offer one position per year for a three-year fellowship.

With a large clinical practice, our fellows are immersed in patient care and assisted reproductive technology-related procedures early in their training. The first year of fellowship is clinical and surgical, and includes off-service rotations in pediatric and adolescent gynecology, male urology, medical endocrinology, pediatric endocrinology, and midlife (menopausal) care. The fellows are also well-educated in advanced operative hysteroscopy and laparoscopy. The entire second year and first half of the third year is research, providing 18 months of uninterrupted time dedicated to research and thesis requirement for subspecialty certification. Beginning July 2022, the required research block will be 12 months with the remaining 6 months focused on either clinical education or research or a combination of both.  The second half of the third year is clinical, reinforcing medical and surgical skills along with patient counseling and decision-making prior to graduating as a compentent REI provider.

We value formal educational opportunites, with two-three hours of didactics weekly. The REI Division participates in weekly Departmental Grand Rounds and frequent journal clubs. Fellows also complete graduate coursework in biostatistics and research methodology through the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Clinical Research Education REACH Program.

Program Aims:

  • Train physicians to acquire a high level of expertise in the medical, surgical, and procedural components of REI, in a model of patient-centered care that builds a foundation of quality care, desirable clinical outcomes, and scientific knowledge that improves health.
  • Build a supportive working and learning environment that facilitates fellows serving as role models for professionalism, caring and compassion.
  • Provide an environment of professional development for fellows that emphasizes expertise, educator and leadership skills, scholarly achievement, career advancement and sufficient preparation to become an independent researcher.
